When someone you love has a new baby, the first thing most of us think to do is drop off a meal or a little gift. And while those things are always appreciated, I’ve found that one of the very best gifts for a new mom is actually a bag full of healthy snacks.

New moms spend so much time nursing, rocking, and snuggling that sitting down for a “real” meal isn’t always possible. Having nourishing, ready-to-eat snacks at arm’s reach can make all the difference during those long newborn days.

My sister just had a baby, so I put together a snack bag for her that included:

  • Fresh chopped fruit
  • Crisp, ready-to-eat veggies
  • A batch of homemade lactation protein balls

These protein balls are one of my go-to recipes, but with a little twist—Brewer’s Yeast! It’s a classic lactation booster that’s been used for years to help increase milk supply. Combined with other powerhouse ingredients like flaxseed and oats, these little bites are the perfect mix of nourishing and satisfying.

My Favorite Way to Gift Snacks

To make it feel extra special (but still simple for me), I keep a few food-gifting supplies on hand so I can easily put together a thoughtful delivery without running to the store at the last minute.

Here are my staples:

These little details make it easy to pull everything together in a way that feels intentional and gift-worthy.

Lactation Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Protein Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 cup peanut butter (or almond butter)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseed
  • 3 Tbsp brewer’s yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • In a stand mixer, combine the peanut butter, honey, vanilla, flaxseed, and brewer’s yeast. Mix until smooth.
  • Add the oats, coconut, and chocolate chips. Mix well to combine.
  • Scoop into balls using a mini cookie scoop and place in an airtight container, using parchment paper between layers.
  • Store in the refrigerator.

Notes

These keep beautifully in the fridge for a week—or you can stash them in the freezer for easy grab-and-go snacking.

Final Thoughts

Meals are wonderful, flowers are beautiful, but sometimes the most practical and meaningful gift you can give a new mom is simply a bag of healthy snacks. It’s one of those small gestures that makes a big difference during those first few weeks of adjustment—and it’s a gift that can be put to good use immediately.
