There is nothing classier than a crisp white tee paired with jeans and a few simple accessories. But it’s not an easy task finding a white shirt that isn’t see through AT ALL, fits well, washes well, and isn’t super expensive.
I went on a hunt to find the best white t-shirts. I ordered and tried on over 50!! I was a little disappointed and frustrated with a lot of the shirts – especially when they were ones that came highly recommended. I guess my standards are super high, but I just knew that what I was looking for had to be out there somewhere!
I’m happy to report that through all that searching, I did find some white shirts that I love. And because different occasions call for different styles of white shirts, I’m highlighting my top 6 shirts in various categories.
Fitted t-shirts are great for layering and tucking into skirts or high-waisted pants. They also provide a more tailored look. The Modern Crewneck T-Shirt and Modern V-Neck T-Shirt from Gap are my top picks for the fitted category.
They are made of thick, stretchy supima cotton fabric, hold their shape great over time, and wash really well. And at $19.95 (without a coupon or sale, which they often have), they’re at a great price point.
I love a t-shirt with a little texture. Target has a couple really great ones that are flattering, come in a ton of colors, and are only $8. This Ribbed Tee has been a favorite in my wardrobe for the past couple years and it’s a great layering piece or shirt to tuck all the way in. This higher neck Ribbed Tee has a slightly different neckline and is great for all the same reasons.
My love for this U Crew Neck T-Shirt from Uniqlo runs deep. It’s dreamy. The fabric is thick and structured with just the right amount of stretch. It’s got a thick collar and is perfect to layer or wear on its own.
I would recommend sizing up on this one (I’m wearing a medium), because it’s a more fitted shirt and the thick fabric will shrink just a tiny bit in the washer and dryer. At $14.90, this white t-shirt is a no-brainer and my pick for best crewneck.
Here’s Uniqlo hitting it out of the park again with their Supima Cotton V-Neck Short-Sleeve T-Shirt. This shirt is very different from the above crewneck, but awesome in it’s own right. It’s a lightweight cotton that is soft and washes well. The v-neck is perfectly cut so that it’s flattering but you don’t have to worry about bending over and exposing yourself. It’s also a great length and won’t shrink, so you can order true-to-size.
This white top is mostly opaque – I do wish it was slightly thicker. I can get away with wearing just a bra under it, but sometimes choose to throw on this undershirt just to be certain.
This short-sleeve white shirt does come and go at Uniqlo. But I’ve always known it to restock, so if white isn’t available when you look, check back and it surely will be again soon!
When you scour the internet for the best white t-shirts, you’ll undoubtedly come across several celebrities and designers who recommend ordering from the mens section. And I can’t blame them! This Classic T-Shirt from the mens section at Gap is a winner.
Some of the others I tried, like Hanes and Fruit of the Loom, were much cheaper … but it showed. The fabric on this top is structured and durable. It’s a great pick when I’m feeling something a little more masculine and boxy. I sized down (X-Small), and will undoubtedly have this shirt on repeat when I want to throw on something comfortable but not frumpy.
At about $9 each, these Women’s 2-Pack Classic T-Shirts from Amazon are truly the best bang for your buck. The fabric is thick, soft, and very stretchy. The v-neck is the perfect cut and the long length isn’t going to ride up.
I was very pleasantly surprised by these tops and for the price, they’re a great closet staple that can be replaced easily and affordably. These t-shirts come in a 2-pack, but also have a huge variety of different colors and even some cute prints.
With any white t-shirt, you always want to wear a nude bra underneath. This one from Tommy John is one of my new favorites. It’s lightly lined and is flattering and comfortable.
And because I KNOW some of you will ask, yes I did try the Brigitte Brianna Favorite V-Neck Basic Tee from SexyModest. I gave it a 10 out of 10 on not being sheer. But I didn’t love that there was a nude liner sewn in (kind of defeats the purpose of a single-layer white t-shirt) and the fit on my body was not flattering. So for those reasons and price, it wasn’t one of my top picks.
I also tried white t-shirts from Athleta, Banana Republic, Carhart, Everlane, H&M, LandsEnd, Madewell, Old Navy, Target, Walmart, Zara, Zenana, and Zyia Active. Some were ok and some were pretty bad, but none compared to the fit, quality, and opaqueness of my favorites listed above.
I hope my hunt for the perfect white t-shirt was helpful and gives you some good options to choose from! If you try any of these shirts and love them, let me know.
There are affiliate links in this post, but I purchased every single one of the 50+ white t-shirts I tried. These are genuinely and authentically my very favorites with absolutely no sway from the companies that sell these shirts.
