As the seasons begin to change and the cold weather sets in, I am always on the lookout for ways I can entertain my kids inside. We recently came up with the funnest idea while we were watching one of our favorite shows, and it has quickly become our favorite easy indoor activity. It’s so simple to set up, and both kids and parents will have fun in the process. Introducing the Great Kids Cookie Bake Off!

Butcher Paper Sign about Easy Indoor activity for kids

It’s a nod to The Great British Baking Show (if you didn’t already catch that), which is a show where bakers compete in challenges to become the “Star Baker” by using creativity and skill. Our kids love helping in the kitchen, and this indoor activity was the perfect way to give them the reins for a change and let them call the shots!

Here’s how we did it so you can pull off your own Great Kids Cookie Bake Off in your own kitchen!

Setup

Setting up for this is surprisingly simple. You would think preparing for a bake off would take a lot of time, but really it comes down to having the ingredients on hand. Walmart is the perfect one-stop shop for all your holiday baking needs. I love the variety of options for both cake mixes and baking chips. This makes the bake off so much fun and allows the kids to really get creative!

Choose a Variety of Options

Where this really becomes fun is when kids have a ton of options at their fingertips for both the cake mixes and baking chips. The more options, the more they have the chance to let their creativity shine! Here are a few we used, but Walmart has so many options, you could really go hog-wild! And when you shop at Walmart, you’re sure to get the best prices and numerous shopping and delivery options to make it as easy as possible.

Divide into Teams

Depending on how many kids you have and their ages, you could allow them to do it individually. If you have enough kids, or they are younger, dividing them into teams is the perfect way to get everyone involved! We paired the oldest kids with the youngest kids and it worked really well.

Print a Recipe For Everyone

We chose a really simple recipe that is a smash no matter what, and really impossible to go wrong with. It is the perfect combination of easy yet delicious and one we can easily let the kids run with (we helped with the oven, of course. Safety first!)

The Finished Cookies

Recipe

1 Cake Mix
⅓ cup oil
2 eggs
1 cup baking chips

Mix ingredients. Form individual cookies on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Bake!

With all of the supplies on hand, it’s time to BAKE! We made it fun by using our best English accents and giving the kids the full GBBS experience. After the cookies were ready, we even “judged” each team and provided feedback (all positive) and commented on the uniqueness of each bake. In the end, we announced a “Star Baker,” but truly everyone can be a winner and enjoy the fruits – or rather sweets – of their labor!

Clean Up

If you have remaining dough you don’t feel like baking right away, scoop onto the baking sheet and freeze them until solid. Then you can place them into a gallon back and plop one out whenever it suits your fancy.

The Great Kids Cookie Bake Off is truly one of the best indoor activities we have ever come up with and I think it will be frequently requested from now on! I’d love to hear your favorite easy indoor activity, too!
