Because we like to park both of our cars in the garage, we're always looking for ways to save space and get organized. And though it's hard to feel like the garage will every be completely clean, these DIY garage hooks have been a huge step in the right direction!
The hooks line our entire wall, saving us so much space and help to keep things off the garage floor. We use them for camping chairs, beach bags, towels, backpacks, and more.

Supplies Needed for DIY Garage Hooks
- Primed 1x4s
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Electric drill
- Screws
- Stud finder
- Hooks
- Spackling + putty knife + sanding board (optional)
1. Install 1x4s
Use your stud finder, measuring tape, and level to mark out where you'll install the primed 1x4s. Then use your drill to attach the 1x4s in a row across the length of the garage.
(Drilling the hooks into the 1x4—rather than directly into the wall—will allow you to space the hooks however you want, instead of worrying about finding studs.)
2. Fill in Drill Holes with Wood Putty (Optional)
If you want to get a more finished look, use spackling to cover up the drill holes.
Apply the spackling with a putty knife and let it dry. (It will look pink at first, but turn white when fully dry.) Once it turns white, use sanding block to even out the surface of the 1x4. You could paint the whole board after filling the holes, if you'd like a more finished look.
3. Install Hooks
Now it's time to install your hooks using your drill and screws.
You can install them however far apart you want—just remember to leave enough room between each hook to adequately store your belongings.

And that's it! The whole project can be done in a short time and will give a huge pay-off every time you enter the garage.
Install hooks across the length of the wall like we did, along a short section of empty wall space, or even vertically. Use them for holding bike helmets, backpacks, coats, etc. You can even add a pocket storage solution for corralling small items like goggles, mittens, and beanies.
